Working For You
The Alaska Counseling Association is an organization of counseling professionals who work in Human Services; including mental health, residential treatment, education, private practice, health care, workforce development, government, and business/industry.
AkCA was formed in 1985 to bring the benefits of the national organization, the American Counseling Association, to Alaskan counselors, and to support the unique issues of rural counseling. Over time the bylaws and other regulations required to maintain affiliation with the American Counseling Association led to the downfall of AkCA. We have ended our official affiliation by adopting new, less cumbersome bylaws. We are still in contact with the American Counseling Association, and may in the future become re-affiliated.
The mission of the Alaska Counseling Association is to enhance the development of Alaskans throughout their lifespan, primarily by promoting access to the highest possible quality of counseling services. This purpose shall be accomplished by the following means: (a) provide general education for the general public regarding counseling services. (b) support the professional competency of Alaskan counselors by providing relevant training. (c) establish and maintain an ethical code of conduct for Alaskan counselors. (d) monitor and influence, when necessary, legislation which affects the Alaskan citizens' access to the highest possible quality of counseling services. (e) support the ethical development and competence of Alaska's graduate students in counseling. If you are an Alaskan counselor, student or allied health professional, we encourage you to join our association and have your voice heard on critical issues.

What is spirituality and what is the difference between spirituality and religion? As counselors, we are often aware of the religious lives of our clients, but may hesitate to focus on the aspects of spirituality in the person. Join us for a discussion about the integration of spiritual principles in the counseling relationship, their therapeutic value and pitfalls.
